As well as returning home to no broadband yesterday evening, there was an eerie silence in the dining room, the room where I keep my desktop PC and after a brief whirring of fans when I pressed the power button, the silence continued. No beeping from the BIOS, nothing sent to screen, just a depressing silence. I’m hoping that it’s the PSU and a friend is cannibalising an old machine to get at the 400w ATX PSU and is going to bring it over at the weekend and we will give it a shot. If it’s not that then I can only think it must be the BIOS battery?
The machine is about 4 years old and I’ve never had any significant problems with it and 4 years seems to be more than long enough to take it for granted. My work spreadsheet is on there, my iPod syncs podcasts via that machine, the external HDDs I use for backup are attached, printer, webcam, phone backups, NOF, Photoshop and a myriad of other stuff that you don’t think twice about until you no longer have access to it. It’s also the machine I use to play poker, I have tried it on the laptop and it’s not good, a little lack of precision with the touchpad and I ended up folding instead of raising with AK, didn’t have a huge effect on the tournament I was playing, but next time, if there is one, who knows? But I am grateful to have access to the laptop, internet and some online backups and have a choice about playing and keep my records somewhere close to being up to date.
